Are you getting enough sleep?
You go to bed, exhausted and ready to sleep. But as soon as you lay down your eyes pop open. Or, you fall asleep quickly, but you wake up and your mind races, you toss and turn. You get out of bed the next morning and feel like you’re less than human. You’re tired, you’re crabby. You think coffee is the answer, you drink a couple of cups and push through. If this sounds like you, you are not getting enough rest at night. If you know the answer to my question about sleep, what did you think and feel when you read the question? What feeling came up? What part of your body did you feel it in? Is it a reality in your life that sleep has never been important? Have you convinced yourself you are fine after 4-5 hours? Did having kids disrupt your sleep patterns for the long haul? Can you recall a time in your life you EVER got good sleep?
Sleep is one of the top 3 key components of health and wellness and is so often brushed off as a luxury versus a need, especially for people of color and women. Finding the cause of why you are not sleeping may just be a subconscious thought you should practice tapping into to shift from not sleeping well to a great night's rest. Lack of sleep is a symptom. Find the cause.
Journal Prompts:
What time did I go to bed as a child? What time did I get up?
As a child, did I stay up past 10pm?
Did I have a quiet space to sleep as a child versus a room where the door was closed but adults were still talking, TV on, etc.?
Did my parents complain of being tired?
Did I witness my parents value on working and getting things done over sleeping and resting their bodies?
Has any traumatic event happened to you that occurred during sleep hours?
Please write down the following in a notebook before you lay down for the night:
Goals
Priorities
To Do’s
Thoughts and gratitude
Experiences
Notes/ reminders
Affirmations
